Picked up this little postcard recently – how current! How did Oscar Wilde know?!
Health diets have really become the ‘thing’ of the moment, especially more recently – anyone try the sugar free diet? Whilst it’s important to take your health seriously, it’s also important to ensure that you’re not following a diet just because it’s in ‘fashion’, but to ensure you are doing what’s right for your body. I would definitely recommend visiting a Registered Dietitian – they know their stuff, and can provide guidance tailored to YOU.
Clearly sugar isn’t all bad – it’s all about balance. Yet, how are we supposed to keep the balance when we could be consuming more sugar than we think, all because there are so many different names for the same thing?! BLOOMIN’ SUGAR!!! Women’s Health names 56 *shocked face* of them (I would hope there’s not many more…!) Ready? Here goes…
Eek! Would you recognise all of these as sugar? I certainly wouldn’t. To make it more complicated, some are FODMAP friendly, others are not.
If in doubt, check. The low-FODMAP diet has taught me to be more aware of the food that I’m eating, without obsessing. Most surprising? Even fruit contains sugars and too much fruit CAN be a bad thing – and certain fruits are harder for the body to digest! It’s changed my outlook on what ‘healthy’ is. Best way to overcome this issue is to know exactly what’s going into the food you’re eating – this avoids FODMAPs sneaking in!
What concerns me most is that manufacturers can make food appear as though it is healthy, but then the label says very differently. Ah well, guess we just have to keep checking those labels!
